Project Requirements from Brief

Your proposed design should provide a total floor area of around 30,000 to 35,000 SF.

If you use one of the provided sites (which are on hillsides), your program spaces will likely be spread across multiple floor levels.

The design program includes:

  • Guest lobby / welcoming area
  • Multiple exhibition spaces for permanent and temporary exhibits on sustainable design principles and technologies / living lab
  • Interactive kid-focused “play zones” for experiencing sustainable technologies first-hand
  • 3 educational spaces / seminar rooms
  • 2 large conference / meeting rooms
  • Visitor cafe with food preparation and guest seating areas
  • Gift shop featuring books and educational materials

In addition to those public-facing spaces, your proposed design should also provide:

  • 4 offices for the center director and administrative staff, as well as open office space for volunteers/docents
  • Storage space for equipment
  • Utility space for mechanical and electrical equipment
  • Stairs and access/egress features as needed

The De School is a social club, restaurant, gallery, gym and community centre housed in a repurposed school in west Amsterdam designed by Dutch architect J.B Ingwersen in 1973. The branding takes the organisational grid of the brutalist building and makes it visible across the promotional assets and wayfinding for the centre.“By revealing the underlying organisational grid of the identity, it forms an essential component of it; components can be removed, added, or rearranged in new formations, reflecting its former and current interior,” say the designers. “We made an abstract grid, derived from architectural gestures (mainly the square), then the typography and the images fit that grid. It is, in this way, very similar to the identity for the Illinois Institute of Technology’s College of Architecture in Chicago.”

  • modular, multifunctionality
  • plants:
    • stem/xylem holds critical parts intact, and transports nutrients throughout the organism
    • each space resembles a leaf with identical structure although different function
