Installing Revit 2016 or 2017 Content Library and Template Files

Is your Revit installation missing the Content Library files or Project Templates?  

If so, follow these steps to download the Revit 2016 or 2017 content library files and configure your Revit installation to find and use them.

Download the Revit 2016 or 2017 Content Library Files

The Revit 2016 or 2017 content library is available to download here:

Unzip and Install the Revit 2016 or 2017 Content Library

  • Unzip the compress archive file.
  • Move the uncompressed folder into the C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\RVT 2016 or C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\RVT 2016 folder on your computer
  • The C:\ProgramData folder is hidden by default.  You may need to turn on the show hidden items option to see it on your hard disk.  In Windows 10:
    • Open Windows Explorer
    • Switch to the View tab.
    • Turn on/enable the Hidden items checkbox.

Configure Revit to Display the New Template and Library Files

Adjust the file paths in these instructions for Revit 2016 or 2017 as needed

  • Open the Revit Application.
  • Open the Revit application menu and click the Options button.
  • Switch to the File Locations tab.
  • Click the green plus sign to the left of the Project template file list and add each of the templates that you would like to appear on your Revit startup screen.  You may want to include:
    • Commerical-Default > Architectural   (C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\RVT 2016\Templates\US Imperial\default.rte)
    • Structural Analysis-Defaut > Structural   (C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\RVT 2016\Templates\US Imperial\Structural Analysis-Default.rte)
    • Mechanical-Default > Mechanical  (C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\RVT 2016\Templates\US Imperial\Mechanical-Default.rte)
    • Construction-Default > CM   (C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\RVT 2016\Templates\US Imperial\Construction-Default.rte)
  • Click the Places button at the bottom of the File Locations tab.
  • Click the green plus sign to the left of the Places list and add each of the library folder locations that you would like to appear when you use the Load Family tool to load library parts into your project.  You may want to include:
    • Imperial Libary   (C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\RVT 2016\Libraries\US Imperial\)
    • Imperial Detail Library  (C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\RVT 2016\Libraries\US Imperial\Detail Items)
    • Or their metric equivalents.
