Which types of structural framing systems and materials are most commonly used in the US for residences? For office buildings?

What factors determine why these are the most used materials?

Steel and concrete are by far more popular due to their structural properties, but with a now greater emphasis on sustainability in the construction industry, mass timber architecture is becoming more popular.

Why do different teams of designers and subcontractors link and share their models during the design process?

What are the advantages of linking models?

Are there any disadvantages to linking models?

Advantages: direct overlaid comparisons telling the exact clash points, able to work virtually and not necessarily in person, automatic updates with each new upload (up to speed)

Disadvantages: requires a lot of storage, dependent on Wifi and having computer access with you, has to have consistent naming for automatic updates

How do you think design coordination was done before we started using digital models?

What advantages does doing this coordination digitally have over previous methods?

Pigeons. Probably a lot more in person meetings and heavy use of printers/fax machines. They might also draw directly on architectural plans, or use tracing paper too.

What strategies can design teams use to find and avoid clashes prior to the start of construction?

What can be done besides sharing the models digitally?

At what point in the project development process should design coordination start?

Is it ever too early?
