Which types of structural framing systems and materials are most commonly used in the US for residences? For office buildings?

What factors determine why these are the most used materials?

Why do different teams of designers and subcontractors link and share their models during the design process?

What are the advantages of linking models?

Are there any disadvantages to linking models?

How do you think design coordination was done before we started using digital models?

What advantages does doing this coordination digitally have over previous methods?

Design coordination would have had to happen in person before we started using digital models. Faxes of hand written blueprints were also probably commonly sent between offices and the the designs would probably require more words in order to get the point across.

What strategies can design teams use to find and avoid clashes prior to the start of construction?

What can be done besides sharing the models digitally?

Linking projects is a good start to avoid clashes prior to the start of construction. Ensuring that the structural elements don’t interfere with design elements is also crucial to avoid clashes. Aside from sharing digital copies, multiple sit downs between the engineers, architects, construction works and clients is essential to ensure that all parties are on the same page.

At what point in the project development process should design coordination start?

Is it ever too early?

Design coordination should start following the creation of a first draft. Any feedback before then would be premature. Following the first draft engineers and clientele can begin revising the design plans and begin the coordination process.
