Main Goals:

  • Design Goal: Energy Sourcing:
  • Measure: Amount of renewable energy produced
  • Targets:
    • Minimum Renewable Energy: 70% of facility’s energy comes from on-site renewable sources
    • Desired Renewable Energy: 100% of facility’s energy comes from on-site renewable sources
  • Strategies:
    • Implementing solar panels in a visible way to produce energy for the facility and teach guests about these renewable energy options.
    • Use wind turbines and hydropower as secondary energy producers with the primary intent of educating guests on their function.
  • Design Goal: Energy Efficiency:
  • Measure: EUI
  • Targets:
    • Minimum EUI: Site EUI less than 56.2 kBtu/ft^2, which is the national median for entertainment/public assembly facilities
    • Desired EUI: Site EUI less than 45kBtu/ft^2
  • Strategies:
    • Minimize energy use by eliminating the need for HVAC heating and cooling 60% of the year by using natural cross-ventilation in all communal spaces.
    • Minimize energy use by capitalizing on natural light with 40% of the day using exclusively natural lighting in communal spaces.
  • Design Goal: Sustainable Building Materials.
  • Measure: What % of building materials are reused, recycled, reusable, or recyclable.
  • Targets:
    • Minimum: 50% of building materials are recycled, 70% of building materials are recyclable or reusable.
    • Desired: 60% off building materials are recycled, 80% of building materials are recyclable or reusable.
  • Strategies:
    • Locally source materials.
    • Use wooden framing.
    • Make part of the facade recycled materials, hi-light as a focal point for guests.
    • Design Goal: Renewable Water Sources:
    • Measure: How many gallons of freshwater are being consumed on site per year?
    • Targets:
      • Minimum: less than 25 gallons/square foot/year (the average for public assembly buildings in 2012)
      • Desired: less than 15 gallons/square foot/year
    • Strategies:
      • Low-flow plumbing fixtures
      • Rain water collection- Redwoods National Park receives 40-60 in of rain/year, great candidate for rain water collection
      • Reusing grey water
