Description

In my proposal, I have conceived a daring and audacious transformation that seamlessly unites a cutting-edge student center/commons with the timeless Y2E2 building. What truly motivates this design is not just about creating additional space. It is about the essence of my vision: transforming the existing structure into a modern architectural marvel by surrounding it with a modern added design, while minimizing the need for extensive demolition.

To achieve this, I initially focused on expanding the old building to make it symmetric, with a squared L-shaped floor plan. With this intent, I have repurposed the existing terrace to make room for the new extension and added a simmetrical block on the right side of the building. I then added the new modern part of the design to the old building. The three main building blocks are arranged diagonally, connecting the edges of the expanded L-shaped old building. This creates a dynamic and visually interesting composition, while also maximizing the use of space and creating a harmonious integration between the old and new elements. These square building blocks feature round facades predominantly made of glazing glass, which not only symbolizes the university's forward-thinking vision but also adds a touch of modernity to the design. In addition, I replaced the old, somewhat outdated triangular roof with a contemporary, flat roof that incorporates both the old and the new building. The final outcome is displayed below.

On every floor, I have created open spaces that are designed to encourage collaboration. There are maker spaces, open study areas, a socializing room with a large flat-screen TV, comfy seating with sofas, coffee machines, and bean bags, a cafeteria with two indoor dining halls and a fully-equipped kitchen, as well as an open gallery space where students can proudly display their artworks. The design is intentionally crafted to foster collaboration among students and cater to a wide range of their needs. Additionally, I have included a terrace for students to enjoy outdoor breaks and soak up the sun.

Finally, to help my client make an informed decision, I have provided detailed sheets comparing the new design with the demolition plan. These comparisons make it easier to visualize the transformation and highlight how the new student center/commons extension preserves the existing structure while bringing in innovative features (see figures below). Additionally, I have proposed two alternative design options for the front facade. One option involves adding more glazing walls alongside the existing ones to flood the interior with natural light and enhance aesthetics. The other option includes glass railings on the terrace to improve visibility, making the outdoor terrace space more inviting.
