Unit 2

This building is supposed to be a high-rise apartment building built in a modern city. Therefore, it is assumed that the designer and the owner want to evaluate how the building grade affects to the total cost and the shape of the building changes the view to the surrounding monument, which is supposed to add the value of residence.

The input parameter values

The input parameter values are shown as the following figure. Top height values are tested from 700 to 800 ft and the top rotation values are tested from 15 to 45 degrees.

Metrics 1: Estimated Building Cost

The total estimated building cost is defined by cost per square foot. The unit cost basically consists of material cost and construction cost. Material cost per foot can be changed based on the quality the client desires. The construction cost will increase as the floor level goes upstairs. The total cost is calculated by multiplying the floor area and unit cost of each floor.

Metrics 2: View to the surrounding monument

The larger the area of the façade facing the monument is evaluated as a higher value for residence. The directness toward the monument can be calculated as below.

The values can be calculated as the following table shows.

For Unit 3

I suggested two metrics to evaluate this building in unit 2 part. Both two metrics do not have direct interaction: cost estimation is calculated by total floor area and building height, while the value of view from building is related to the facade area and rotation of the building. However, the cost should be less, whereas the value should be higher. Therefore, more important metric is estimated building cost because it is related to gross floor area, which is much larger than the facade area. Therefore, I weigh cost estimation as 2 and value of view as 1. Furthermore, since the both the scores are the opposite of positive and negative, I multiplied -1 to value 2.

I ranked these values with color codes from yellow, green to blue. Looking at evaluation scores, No.1, 8, 9 would be top 3 recommended design alternatives. The best one is No.1.

The best case design

  • The best-case model is when the top height is 700 ft and top rotation is 15 degrees. The image is shown as the following image.

Visual Feedback By Adjusting the Appearance of the Panels

I designed this building with three twisted towers. However, the result of the panels is crossing each tower and it generates invalid solutions. The floor plan should not be divided into three buildings.
