What are the primary goals of creating a building model? Who are the key stakeholders?

Architectural model builders create scale models for proposed and completed construction projects.

Stakeholders include the client, the main contractor, designers, subcontractors and people employed in any capacity in the project.

  • What do they need?
  • Three-dimensional sketching, physical models, BIM etc.
  • What do they care about most?
  • Meeting Physical Requirements, User Experience, time and money, sustainability etc.

How much detail should you include in your building model? How do you decide?

  • As you develop your initial design?

Models will be in their most pristine condition, buildings will be sited and roughly sized with basic site layout. There may only be analysis data and 2D CAD data or hand sketches.

  • As you continue to iterate and develop on your design?

Models will contain the accurate quantity, size, location, and systematic relationships of all objects that will eventually be installed.

  • What are the key stages?

Conceptual stage, design stage, and construction.

  • And how much detail should you include at each stage?

Conceptual: Basic ideas with little detailing.

Design: Models begin to accurately resemble what will be installed

Construction: Models will contain all building elements. They will be geometrically accurate while not showing excessive fabrication level detailing.

What are the advantages of getting the Revit component families (for furniture, equipment, and fittings) directly from the manufacturer versus from an online sharing website like RevitCity.com?

The manufacturer's components are more accurate in their Revit components and are up to date. Models from online sharing sites may not have this level of accuracy.
