Practice Exercise: Building Envelope Systems

Your building envelope recommendations for this practice exercise should feature:

  • Your recommended settings for the Insight Factor tiles
  • A screenshot from Insight showing the Predicted Mean EUI and the range of values resulting from your assumptions

Benchmark Comparison (Baseline Scenario):

Benchmark Comparison (Building Envelope Choices):

  • Wall Construction: R38 Wood
  • Window-to-Wall Ration: 30% for each orientation
  • Window Shading: 1/4 Win Height for each orientation
  • Thermal Properties Glazing Surfaces: Double LoE for each orientation

Benchmark Comparison (Building Envelope and Power & Lighting Choices):

  • Plug Load Efficiency: 0.60 W/sqft (CA Title 24 Requirement)
  • Lighting Efficiency: 0.70 W/sqft
  • Daylighting & Occupancy Controls: just occupancy controls (including both doesn’t save anymore on EUI but probably adds cost to the project
  • Adding these power and lighting measures lowered the predicted mean EUI by 6.6 kBtu/sqft/yr

Benchmark Comparison (Photovoltaic Panels):

  • Surface Coverage: 75% (realistic, considering normal roof area requirements for equipment, etc.)
  • Panel Efficiency: 20.4%
  • Payback Limit: 20-30 years (adding 10 years increases the EUI and removing 20 years doesn’t change it)
  • Adding Photovoltaic panels lowers our mean EUI by 31.1 kBtu/sqft/yr, to 15.6 kBtu/sqft/yr
