I opted to use steel supports to utilize the longer spans and reduce the overall number of columns in the space.
Even with the increased flexibility I found it very challenging to optimally design a grid on both levels that didn’t impede the stairs, elevator, or atrium without over-saturating the space with columns and other supports. I tried to maximize placing columns at intersections to limit congestion and meet the designer’s intent, but even so I still had trouble designing joists (beam systems) that didn’t cause clashes with walls in the interior portion of the space.
