• To minimize intrusion of the structural system into the occupant space, I opted to go with the longer spanning steel beams so that I wouldn’t need any columns in the middle of rooms/hallways. I aimed for a relatively even spacing between beams of 20’ in x and 25’ in y for load distribution and design aesthetic, which also happened to steer clear of the northeast stairs and elevator. I did have to make a modification to the beam grid to accommodate the atrium and southern staircase.
