My main strategy was to use a steel-frame system. The reason I decided on this system is because it provided the maximum spans versus a wood-frame system. This was important to me because as I looked at the architectural design, it was apparent that big, open areas where available were part of the designer’s goals. The open spaces, whether they were the atrium, the seating areas, or the conference room, and the circulation areas seemed to be designed with open spaces in mind. I wanted to reduce the amount of members, especially columns, throughout these open spaces. Also, I tried to be careful about placing columns in the middle of hallways or rooms, unless necessary.
I think I met the designer’s intent, but only by using steel framing. I think it would have been much more difficult using a wood-frame system.
