Journal Entry For
Module 7 - Building Envelope Systems

I don’t think I included this in my module 5/6 submission so I’d thought I’d include it here for reference.

Here are a couple of screenshots of the building:

Here’s the insight for the building with all the settings, walls, floors, and roof left as generic (except for glazings):

The project is also modeled as an “office” type building according to Revit, which I felt was most appropriate as the other option I was considering was the “museum” choice, but I felt like museums sometimes have very specific standards to temperature and humidity of rooms that this building would not need.

For the first initial model, here is what insight has labeled as having the largest potential impact:

  1. So my first change was to change the

To the heat pump option instead:

  1. Next, was the operating schedule
    1. for this I set the facility to 12/6 because I want it to be open on weekends. I’m thinking maybe closed on Wednesday’s or something similar. (I changed this in revit and adjusted the insight accordingly).
  2. Plug load efficiency I left alone for now
  3. Roof construction is a very interesting one for my model as I’m planning on having a green roof. From what I’ve read though, the green roof doesn’t really provide much in the way of insulation, or R value. Also the ramps/pathways around the building are currently modeled as an angled wall with a ramp on top of it, so I’m not sure how that effects the energy model. Considering I want to use mostly timber construction, I picked a R60 wood frame roof. See schematic types screenshot
  4. Lighting efficiency I left alone for now.
  5. The Western WWR is currently at 64% (BIM) and I like the aesthetics of the design I currently have, so I’ll lock this in at the BIM value. This isn’t ideal but ideal is also 0% which isn’t happening, but I’ll consider reducing the amount of glazing on this wall.
  6. Infiltration I also left alone for now

After these changes, here is what Insight reports:

image

Schematic Type changes:

image

Roof changed to R60 wooden construction

Exterior walls also changed to R38 wooden construction

Interior walls we’re left alone for now, but I do want to model them as some type of wooden construction, I’m just not sure on the specifics yet

Ceilings left alone

I want radiant heating/cooling floors made out of concrete for thermal mass (hopefully the only concrete in the construction)

Doors, changed to wooden construction instead of metal

Exterior windows, I will have to get more specific with each windows later, but for now I want a high SHGC and high R-value as, this location has a very high heating demand compared to cooling

Interior windows, none yet

Skylights, none

After these schematic type changes, it seems like the insight results are worse, so I’ll have to workshop this a little more.

For 2 Units

Please share your design showing the features of the proposed building envelope, including the locations and characteristics of:

  • the wall and roof surfaces
  • the openings/glazed surfaces
    • windows and/or curtain walls
    • doors
    • skylights
  • any shading or sun control features

For 3 Units

  • Use your Building Element Model to create an Energy Model.
  • Submit this Energy Model to the Insight analysis tool to explore how the choices and specifications you’ve made in your Building Element Model affect the predicted energy performance.
    • Be sure to set the Operating Schedule factor tile to use the BIM value.
    • Narrow the range of values being considered for the building envelope-related factor tiles to focus on the BIM Model value or better.
  • Explore how other factors (such as Photovoltaic panel options) can further improve your building performance — by using renewable energy to complement your energy saving envelope features.
  • Share the results of your Insight optimization:
    • Include an image of the EUI meter and range indicator after you’ve made your adjustments to show what your current assumptions predict and how much potential there is for additional improvements.
    • List the key Factor Tile settings that are driving these results.
