Your Design Journal entries this week should highlight your design thinking that influenced your decisions about:
- your overall strategy and the features of the structural system
- the material and framing system selected
- the locations of structural columns and major framing elements
- any special structural challenges
Material and structural framing system selected

For Structural Beam System:

My main goal was to maintain an open layout while providing strong structural support. I chose a steel framing system using W10x49 columns and W12x26 beams because these shapes can span large distances with fewer supports. I placed columns along the perimeter and near load-bearing walls to keep open areas clear, while also ensuring proper support for the floors and roof. The major framing elements, such as the beam system, were spaced at 6 feet on center to balance material efficiency and structural performance. One challenge was ensuring that large open spaces (like atriums and circulation paths) were not obstructed, so I carefully positioned columns to avoid interrupting those key areas.
