Your Design Journal entries this week should highlight your design thinking that influenced your decisions about:
- your overall strategy and the features of the structural system
- I used a steel structure with columns that goes all the way up and consistent beam placement on each floor. The steel structure allows for longer beam lengths. Longer beams means that I can have columns are off to the side that are not visibly obvious, which aligns with my goal of wanting my structural system more hidden rather than a large design feature. The beams are placed just below the floor above (~-0’ 5141/256”).
- the material and framing system selected
- Steel structure
- Beams:
- Columns:
- Placed on grid intersections up to 50’ apart
- the locations of structural columns and major framing elements
- The columns were placed near the edges of the building and near internal walls to minimize disruptions in the flow through the building
- There is only one beam that is located in the middle of the building due to structural needs, but it will aid in partitioning the atrium/ open space on each floor and not hinder use.
- any special structural challenges
- The floors with angled walls made it difficult to decide on a consistent grid and thus structural system, which is why there is one column in the middle of the atrium. This still works, however, for the reasons mentioned above.
