Design Journal Entry - Module 8

Your Design Journal entries this week should highlight your design thinking that influenced your decisions about:

  • your overall strategy and the features of the structural system
    • My primary strategy was to define a grid around my core walls that kept exhibition spaces open and didn’t impede on a customer’s experience visiting the facility. To accomplish that, I used a combination of core walls, columns, beams, beam systems and braces depending on the slab and walls being supported.
  • the material and framing system selected
    • I opted to use timber columns (8” x 12” and 8” x 16”), glulam beams and joists (3.125” x 12”), and glulam braces (5.125” x 12”) for framing system, as I felt that aesthetically using wood brought to life sustainable features that the building is designed to promote.
  • the locations of structural columns and major framing elements
    • Almost all of my columns are located along the building’s outer walls at corners or midspans of longer beam elements (25+ ft). The braces are along the back (NE) side of the building and span from the 2nd to 8th floors.
  • any special structural challenges
    • I struggled to lay out columns and a beam system in the center of my building without over-saturating the space, which is what ultimately led to me using exterior braces as an alternative solution. Also, without doing analysis, I’m unsure how well glulam beams will support my cantilevered 5th story or terrace on the 4th story since timber’s biggest issue in structural design is deflection.
