Strategy:

My design focuses on a modular, efficient, and sustainable structural system. The hexagonal framework enhances stability while optimizing material use. The elevated design minimizes ground impact, and the integration of glass facades and open terraces promotes natural light and ventilation for energy efficiency.

Structural Features:

  • Steel Frame Structure: Ensures strength, flexibility, and prefabrication benefits.
  • Hexagonal Geometry: Even load distribution and enhanced stability.
  • Elevated on Slender Columns: Reduces footprint and improves air circulation.
  • Curtain Wall System: Maximizes daylight while integrating shading for passive cooling.
  • Rooftop Green Space: Provides insulation, stormwater management, and sustainability.
  • Sustainable & Adaptive Design: Modular for easy modifications, promoting deconstruction and reuse.

The locations of structural columns and major framing elements:

  • Structural Columns:
    • Positioned at the corners of the hexagonal base for even load distribution.
    • Additional columns along the perimeter provide lateral support and stability.
    • Slender columns extend from the ground to support the overhanging floors and terraces.

  • Major Framing Elements:
    • A steel framework connects the primary columns, forming a rigid structural grid.
    • Horizontal beams support each floor level, ensuring effective load transfer.
    • Cantilevered sections on the upper floors are reinforced with additional framing for stability.
    • Diagonal bracing and louvered panels enhance lateral strength and wind resistance.

  • Room Support Structure:
    • Walls are supported by additional columns to maintain structural integrity.
    • A lintel beam is incorporated above openings to evenly distribute loads and prevent stress concentrations.

Any special structural challenges:

While designing the structure, I encountered several challenges that required careful consideration:

  • Overhanging Floors & Cantilevered Sections – The extended terraces required reinforced framing and additional support to prevent excessive deflection.
  • Slender Columns – To ensure stability, I carefully positioned structural columns and used a rigid steel framework to distribute loads effectively.
  • Large Openings & Lintel Beams – Additional columns and lintel beams were incorporated above openings to evenly distribute loads and maintain wall integrity.
