Design Journal Entry - Module 8

Your Design Journal entries this week should highlight your design thinking that influenced your decisions about:

  • your overall strategy and the features of the structural system
    • Structure features cantilever beams and an opening in the middle for atrium. I was aiming for a steel structure that was as consistent as possible throughout all the floors in order to limit the different lengths of steel to cut down on costs.
  • the material and framing system selected
    • Steel Schedule consists of the following:

  • the locations of structural columns and major framing elements
    • Majority of the framing elements are locates along the gridlines.
  • any special structural challenges
    • Due to the atrium and smaller upper flowers in my building I had to utilize a lot of cantilevers (see image below).
    • I also had to shift gridline C slightly to the west due to their being a void that cantilevers could not support. As a result, there are increased number of differing lengths of steel. This deviates from my initials plans and something to consider for future designs.
