Overview
- Key / Essential / Unique Design Features
- Mass Timber
- Low WWR with an all-glass southern facade
- The “Arm “ structural layout is used instead of the typical grid layout of beams to allow HVAC ducts to run parallel, reducing floor-ceiling height.
- Core walls brace in the perpendicular direction to the beam layout on the northern end of the building.
- The beam at the end of each arm braces perpendicularly at the southern end. At this point, the HVAC ducts have ended.
- The three-story atrium with a glass roof/floor allows the fourth and fifth floors to engage exhibit 1 on the ground floor.
- Each level gives different views of the ground floor exhibit.
- Your Big Successes
- Overall, multi-system integration by the end seemed to make sense logistically (one exception, see challenges)
- The warm and natural interior space puts sustainability, by use of biogenic materials, on full display.
- Programming.
- Creating a vertical spatial gradient of public, to semi-public, to private spaces.
- Cafes and outdoor spaces, when nice weather allows large sliding glass doors to open, could transform the way space is inhabited on the fourth and fifth floors.
- Creates a draw for people to experience the entire building.
- Gives a more intimate feel than the first three floors
- Your Big Challenges -
- Making revisions to the previous week's projects because new logistical conflicts arise when adding another system.
- Whether it was clashed or losing floor-to-ceiling height.
- Using the ACC
- Not correctly saving and losing work
- Using the correct template
- I was having issues with structure and went ahead and built it straight into the architectural project since I am more familiar with that template. It ended up making things more complicated for me down the road.
- Navigating old videos that no longer matched the current Revit user interface.
- Lessons Learned
- Practice the modeling techniques each week in a very simple model while watching the videos.
- Watching all the videos, or even one video in its entirety, and then modeling will ensure you miss a step.
- Trying to immediately model systems into your main project will cause frustration as you do not yet have the skill to insert systems yet. Practice on something simple. Then, once you have some basics figured out, attempt to model in your main project.
