Overview
- Key / Essential / Unique Design Features that you explored in your project.
- My 25% green roof and 75% PV Panels
- My greywater reuse system
- Curtain panel system and many windows that allow for natural light, all with glazing applied
- Wraparound balconies on the north and south sides of the building which provide a unique look to the envelope
- Large gift shop with interactive sustainability elements
- Open concept layout for natural visitor flow and to minimize stuffiness
- Your Big Successes -- what worked very well and what features you're most proud to share as examples to inspire others.
- I’m proud of how the envelope turned out. I was worried in the earlier stages as it looked quite boxy but I think the window style and the balconies really brought it together.
- The grey water reuse system was daunting at first and difficult to connect but I’m proud of my accomplishment in creating it.
- I’m proud of my building’s sustainability performance. My walls, roof, and foundation all have very high R values. I’m also proud of my decentralized HVAC design that only provides the necessary flow to each space.
- Your Big Challenges -- what aspects of the project created the biggest challenges and what would you do differently (in hindsight) to avoid or overcome these challenges.
- Overall understanding of the coordination of all the models in the beginning. I didn’t understand how these would connect to each other later. I wish I had planned my overall building design early on with all of these other systems in mind and had a better understanding of what each system entailed.
- Connecting plumbing systems and making connections. It was very difficult to create views that were helpful and to connect the pipes in a non-disruptive way that worked. I wish I had not put my bathrooms back to back because it would have given me more space to work with.
- Lessons Learned -- what sage words of advice would you share with other students who are embarking on a similar project.
- Plan early for all of your systems! Gain an understanding of what a structural system entails, where HVAC systems go and run through, how much space you need in your bathrooms for plumbing etc. Plan floor heights that have space for everything in one of the first weeks. All of this stuff will make life later so much easier later on!
