Journal Entry For
Module 3 - Project Goals Targets & Strategies

Goal 1:use renewable energy to meet the energy needs of the house as much as possible to achieve the purpose of environmental protection

Measure:  Annual energy use and Annual energy generation

Targets:

  • minimally acceptable value: Optimize building energy performance by 80%
  • desired / target value: net-zero energy

Strategies:

  1. solar power generation
    1. This design realizes a reversible current grid-connected solar power generation system. On the whole, it can realize solar power generation and home power supply. When more solar power is produced than is used, the surplus is sold to the grid and used to buy electricity from the grid when there is not enough solar power. This system mainly consists of three parts: The first part is the power generation module. The second part is the inverter module. The third part is the control module.
  2. ground heat source air conditioning system
    1. The geothermal air condition system consists of a ground loop and heat pump. The ground loop is a system of pipes that are buried in the shallow ground near the building. A fluid circulates through the ground loop to absorb or relinquish heat within the ground. In the winter, the heat pump removes the heat from the fluid in the pipe, concentrates it, and transfers it to the building. This process is reversed in the summer.
  3. passive house design
    1. The Eaves: The basic idea of the eaves is to block the incoming sunlight as much as possible in the summer (during most of the summer it completely blocks the direct light from the south), but to allow the sunlight to enter the room in the winter to complement the internal heat.
    2. The Clearstory Window: Clerestory windows are used in our design. Sunlight through these clearstory windows will be reflected by the inner ceiling, supplementing the light while avoiding direct sunlight from the living areas. Also, these windows are equipped with remote-controlled shading curtains to block light from the windows when needed.
    3. The Materials for Window: The material for windows on the wall is double glazing with low-emissivity coating, which is not only for heat conservation but also used to enhance the overall structural strength. The U-value of these kinds of glazing is relatively low so its property of thermal insulation is great. In addition, its solar transmittance moderates so that the indoor light is enough without the temperature being too high. As for its material, I will choose triple glazing with low-emissivity coating, which means there is less light going through the clerestory window so that the heat will not be high in the house.
    4. The Thermal Mass: I will choose concrete as the thermal mass. In the winter, the thermal mass absorbs the heat in the daytime and releases the heat indoors at night. In the summer, the thermal mass absorbs the heat in the daytime and releases the heat to the ground. Therefore, the thermal mass can decrease the temperature difference between daytime and night, and make the house warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

Goal 2: Save as much water as possible

Measure:  Annual water used

Targets:

  • minimally acceptable value: Optimize water usage performance by 80%
  • desired / target value: net-zero water

Strategies:

  1. Using water-efficient plumbing fixture
  2. Set up landscape cisterns to collect rainwater.
  3. Water treatment system

Goal 3 use renewable material as much as possible to achieve the purpose of environmental protection

Measure:  percentage of building materials are reusable and recyclable.

Targets:

  • minimally acceptable value:40% of building materials are recycled, and 65% of building materials are recyclable and reusable.
  • desired / target value:50% of building materials are recycled, and 75% of building materials are recyclable and reusable.

Strategies:

  1. Using bamboo for some flooring, and pavilion
  2. Use wooden material.
  3. Reused the material from the previous building
