  • Space Budget — a list that identifies the functions and dimensions of all the programmed spaces in your proposed design.
  • Building Layout — a sketch or bubble diagram that shows the spaces in your proposed design with the connections between them as well as connections to exterior spaces.

The overall design has the common spaces like lobby/check-in and the cafe as center points to allow for circular ventilation. The entire south-facing wall will be windows to trap as much direct gain as possible. The climbing area that is designed to have 55-foot walls extends through both floors, allowing for an open space as well as a great view for those enjoying the cafe upstairs.

On the first floor, I wanted to make sure that the check-in/lobby was close to the rentals desk for user purposes. Second, I wanted to place the beginner bouldering area next to the climbing area for large group purposes. This would be easier for birthday parties or events that would use both spaces. All of the restrooms are located in the locker rooms along the northwest side of the arched exterior wall. The mechanical room is large and to the side of the locker rooms. This also shortens the distance for utilities to travel in terms of wiring.

The workout area will be located on the north side of the building to allow for natural light as well as cooling purposes to balance the heat radiation from humans within the space. The gift shop will be a clear, glass room so that people can see the merchandise (window shop) and it is adjacent to the advanced bouldering area.

  • Building Model — an initial building model. This first model will have a very low level of detail (LOD 200), using generic walls to indicate the preliminary sizes and locations of the major programmed spaces (based on your space budget and building layout diagram).

Here is the initial building model. While I am still playing around with the dimensions, I let the center and core of the buildings be open on each floor to allow for circular ventilation. The total height of the building is 60 feet tall due to the length of the climbing walls, the first floor reaching 25 feet tall for bouldering walls.

  • Exterior Walls — use generic walls to indicate the preliminary location of the exterior wall surfaces (don’t worry about modeling the windows, glazing features, and materials now -- you’ll do that next week in Module 7).
  • Interior Walls — use generic walls to indicate the preliminary location of the interior wall surfaces (again, don’t worry about modeling the interior doors and architectural features -- you’ll do that in future weeks as you continue to design and refine your model).

  • Building Cores and Circulation Elements — place stairs and generic walls to indicate:
    • the preliminary locations of the building cores (stair and elevators shafts)- shown in level one and two
    • circulation spaces (corridors and hallways)- shown in level one and two
    • and utility spaces (public restrooms and mechanical rooms)- shown in level one
