Module 7 Design Journal Entry
Step 1 - Generative Design Framework
Step 2 - Generative Design Study
Step 3 - Generative Design Study Results
Figure 2 below shows the results of my generative design study in Dynamo/Revit, including the 22 generated building forms and the “parallel coordinates graph”. I believe there is no “optimal” building form from these results, as there are tradeoffs between the different evaluators. However, I did like the design shown below, with a slenderness ratio of 0.012, a gross floor area of 2,526,393 sf (bonus points because it has a high mid rotation, making the form more visually interesting), and a facade cost of about $48,320,990. The parallel coordinates graph is helpful for summarizing and comparing the metrics of each design. For example, one interesting trend I see is that towers with a higher mid rotation and a smaller circle radius tend to have lower concrete floor slab costs. With the information from the parallel coordinates graph, I would probably suggest to the owner to build a tower that has a higher top height (perhaps in the range of 650-700 ft), but lower concrete floor and curtain wall facade costs. The options in this range have a smaller circle radius, which helps maintain the higher slenderness ratio (more “aesthetic”).
