  • Scatterplot Cantilever Length vs. Cantilever Area
image

I put cantilever length in X axis and cantilever area in Y axis. As shown in the figure, longer cantilever means larger cantilever area as wells as larger vertical deflection shown as dot size. Also, the required beam depth is also shown in terms of color, larger cantilever beam requires deeper sections.

  • Scatterplot Backspan Length vs. Cantilever Area
  • image

I put backspan length in X axis and cantilever area in Y axis. As shown in the figure, there is no strong relationship between the cantilever area and backspan length. However, under the same backspans (36 ft, 38 ft), larger cantilever areas have larger dot size (Vertical deflection) annd larger beam depth.

In these two cases, the tradeoff between usable spaces and structural requirements is illustrated. It shows the conflict between structural engineers and archects. In the perspective of structural engineers, these two scatterr plots will lead me to the solution of minimum cantilever of 10 ft so that cost is saved.
