Roof Optima

README (Tool Documentation)

This design assistant tool helps designers and consultants make informed decisions on how to best allocate roof space between photovoltaic (PV) panels, green roofs, and stormwater retention strategies — based on client priorities for sustainability, resilience, and cost. Users can define project-specific priority weights and key design parameters (such as location, available roof area, structural loads, and cost factors). The tool then calculates an overall performance score across the three dimensions.

It automatically evaluates multiple roof allocation scenarios and visualizes the results, enabling users to identify the most advantageous combinations that align with client goals. This supports transparent, data-driven decision-making in the early design process — helping deliver high-performance, climate-resilient, and cost-effective roof solutions.

User inputs:

  1. Location Selection:
    1. Enter 0 for Palo Alto, 1 for New York City, or 2 for Seattle
  2. % of roof area as green roof (after accounting for mechanical equipment area, the remaining area will be dedicated to solar PV)
  3. Building base/roof length and width (ft.)
  4. Priority Weights
    1. Cost: 0-100%
    2. Resilience: 0-100%
    3. Sustainability: 0-100%

Output:

A weighted cost/resilience/sustainability score for roof performance
