What types of building information are best portrayed in 3D views?

An overview of the building is best portrayed in a 3D view because one can easily see all the relevant details and depth in one view. Overall, 3D views are helpful when depth is a necessary metric. Constructors would appreciate a 2D view because they simply need to know where to build the walls, windows, etc. — depth isn’t as relevant because they just need a two-axis coordinate system for the placement of the building shell.

Should your design ideas always be conveyed through photorealistic renders?

Not all design ideas should be rendered because there will be an assumption that the design is final or is approaching its final stages. However, if any other form is presented, there will be an implicit understanding that the design isn’t final and is open to changes, which makes the stakeholders more willing to help out. On another note, if the presentation of design ideas is of upmost importance, then a photorealistic view could be appropriate.

How can schedule views be used to assist with procurement and model-based estimating?

The schedule views are very helpful in knowing all the elements in a model. With that information, one can quickly estimate the cost. Also, having a centrally located list of all elements ensures that everything is accounted for when construction begins. Finally, because there is a grouping of similar elements on schedules, all stakeholders can have a better understanding of the repeated elements and patterns within the building.
