  • Heating & Cooling strategy and how you implemented it in your design

3 different systems to maintain 3 different location in the large house. This will ensure that air ducts are not reuired to be so massive to reach areas and supply the flow of air required in the entire building by 1 air handling unit. This is also required for this house specifically because the basement in not beneath each room requiring air. If a crawl space was incorporated into the design, then one ground unit could be implemented. The 3 sections are split up as shown below.

In the Western building, I used an AHU - split-system - horizontal 60000 Btu to maintain the large, vaulted roof room with many windows. In the Eastern building, I used an AHU - Horizontal 6 square feet of coil to maintain the garage, bowling alley, thetre room, and master bedroom spaces. In the Central building, I used an AHU - split system - vertical 10 to maintain the 1st and 2nd floor of the building.

  • Air ducts

Rectangular air ducts were utilized throughout the building with various dimensions depending on the CFM required for that tree of ducts. As it is the norm to see air ducts on the floors in Chicago-area homes, Mine have also been placed on the ground. This will allow for the warm air to rise in the winter and the cold air to maintain lower in the summer. In order to reach the second floor, the ducts were ran up through the floor along the landing leading down to the basement.

  • Special HVAC system challenges encountered

Due to the complexity of my design, the typical procedure was difficult to apply. Even when, a plethora of changes were required to be implemented to adhere to spacial constraints. Some air duct units were modeled individually by hand since the automatic system placement did not take into account more plan options or constraints.
