Building information includes exterior and interior designs, building structures, space, lighting are best portrayed in 3D views.

Stakeholders require 2D views includes contractors/builders, architects, engineers as they need accurate dimensions, materials for constructions and cost estimations.

Give examples of how the building information for a specific location in the project needs to be filtered for different audiences and purposes?

When showing the building design to clients, building information should include detailed layout of how the spaces can be use with furniture, fixtures, and casework elements, and can filtered out annotations and dimensions.

When showing the building design to contractors and builders, building information should include major building elements such as walls, doors, windows, floors, roofs, etc. with detailed annotations and dimensions. Interior elements such as furniture should be filtered out.

Should your design ideas always be conveyed through photorealistic renders?

  • How does the level of detail in the rendering and its presentation affect the perception of stakeholders reviewing your design?

No, photorealistic renders are usually for final presentation, while in early phase simple design model is enough to present the ideas.

Higher level of detail in rendering helps to better showcase the design to clients, while basic level of rendering can help contractors and engineers to have a clearer understanding of the building layout.
