What are the principal advantages of using a single building information model of the existing conditions as the foundation for modeling several proposed design alternatives for a portion of the building?

Using a single building information model of the existing conditions as the foundation for modeling several proposed design alternatives offers several advantages. The most obvious benefit being the facilitated comparison between designs. Additionally, a single model ensures that all design alternatives are based on the same accurate representation of the existing conditions. This reduces discrepancies and errors that can arise from having multiple models. This method also allows for more collaboration on a single model. Changes made to the existing conditions are automatically reflected across all alternatives, which enhances coordination and communication among team members. Also, updating a single model is more efficient than making changes in multiple models. This saves time and resources. A single model can facilitate more comprehensive analysis across all alternatives, providing insights that can inform the decision-making process.

In your project, which features of the proposed design did you choose to model as design alternatives?

For my project I chose to model a socializing area as a design alternative. I chose this area because I thought that there was lots of variability in how the room could be arranged and I wanted to experiment with furniture to create the most socially flowing and cohesive room. The biggest challenge was making sure the furniture pieces didn’t close the space up. For example the couches needed to be arranged around the TV but not in a way that closed of that space from the rest of the room. It was fun to mess around with placement and see how it affected the space. I was also surprised because my second iteration was accidentally way better than the first and I had a plan going into the first one so it seems that I arranged things better when I had no plan.
