What are the primary goals of creating a building model? Who are the key stakeholders?

  • A building model is created in order to visualize both vividly and on paper, what a certain structure will look like before even being built. It allows for proper planning and analyzes different components of the elevations to the electricity to the overall size of the structure. Small things from exits to the overall foundation, need to be planned in order to prevent mistakes that can cause injury such as tripping hazards.
  • The key stakeholder can be the people that either will use the building for a specific use or those that will own it for a business or similar market. They want a building to be functional as well as serve the purpose its meant to be used for. It can range from it being a school to a movie theater that both need to be designed and planned accordingly to be able to be used by people.

Many door and window manufacturers provide Revit families for doors and windows that you can specify for your building design.

  • Manufacturers are able to have those windows and therefore apply them to the construction of a building design when needed. By having those specific families of doors and windows, you can easily see how the model will look as it progresses. It shows how certain real windows that are available will look in the model. Not only that, but it also benefits the manufacturer as the different windows they might have added can actually be bought to fit the particular building producing them a profit.
  • The Revit family windows may not reflect real-world windows and therefore finding windows made and designed by Revit but not real life, can make it difficult. By having those manufacturing windows already built and put into a library, all you need to do is pick a window from a library and apply it to the model. Later on, if it fits the design model, it can be applied to the actual construction of the the structure.

What are the advantages of getting the Revit component families (for furniture, equipment, and fittings) directly from the manufacturer versus from an online sharing website like RevitCity.com?

By getting Revit component families from a manufacturer you can see what real windows are readily available to be applied to the actual construction of a building or house. When using the online sharing, a lot of the times you see windows that are designed by a variety of people, but either not made at all, or not available often which can be difficult for the actual construction as the plans will not reflect the windows shown in the design. Some windows can seem really unique, but them being able to be created in real life can either be too difficult or even expensive.
