What are the principal advantages of using a single building information model of the existing conditions as the foundation for modeling proposed additions or renovations?
- Why not create a separate model for the new proposed design?
I think having all versions in the same file can help in seeing what has changed or what is proposed to change. Also, seeing the existing building can aid our understanding of where we are in space, relative to the existing structure. I believe this can make it easier to orient yourself when you are on the site and determining which parts to demolish and what to add.
What sort of complexities are introduced when you construct a building complex in phases?
- What happens at the interfaces between the buildings as the phases advance?
- How can you plan and prepare for these complexities as your create your initial building model?
What are the principal advantages of using a single building information model of the existing conditions as the foundation for modeling several proposed design alternatives for a portion of the building?
- Why not create a separate model for each of the design alternatives?
In your project, which features of the proposed design did you choose to model as design alternatives?
- Why did you choose these building features? And what were the biggest challenges in modeling them as the design alternatives?
I decided to model alternatives for the Third Floor Terrace layout. I thought two design options that make use of the area in different ways can aid the owner’s decision in what he wants to do with that space. The first option is better suited for individuals to study on their own, whereas the second option promotes a more social environment, better suited for relaxing.
The biggest challenges for me was to make sure the visibility graphics were right. I would have times where option 1 would show on my option 2 floor plan view. Furthermore, I had already furnished the Main Model prior to modelling the alternatives. Unfortunately, I couldn’t figure out a way to hide the main model layout. So, I had to delete those elements and re-do them as Option 1, separate from the main model. As a result, the main model has an empty terrace. There’s probably a way to get around this but these were my biggest challenges when modelling alternatives.
