What are the principal advantages of using a single building information model of the existing conditions as the foundation for modeling proposed additions or renovations?

  • It is important to actually see the process of how the building will develop, rather than starting over from scratch. First of all, it is much easier to simply renovate a building rather than knocking it down only to build it back up again a bit differently. The same goes for model making. It is easier to add on than to start over. Furthermore, it ins important to see the different phases of the project, in order to know what is getting demolished, what is being added, and how it will be constructed.

In your project, which features of the proposed design did you choose to model as design alternatives?

  • I chose to alter the room setups and interiors. I chose this because it is much more of a decorative and personal part of the building, whereas the rooms themselves are actually required. For instance, bathrooms, meeting space, and a maker space are required in a building, whereas the furniture and how a room is set up is completely up to those who actually use the rooms.
