What are the principal advantages of using a single building information model of the existing conditions as the foundation for modeling proposed additions or renovations?

The main advantage is that if while modelling the new design you detect an issue with the old model, you would be able to easily change it. The change would reflect all the phases in which the existing structure is shown. If you have a separate model for the renovation you would have to make the change in both or more models which takes more time.

In your project, which features of the proposed design did you choose to model as design alternatives?

I chose to have different facade options as well as different floor layouts. I chose these as they are the biggest components for the client. One gives the client a different option for the building’s appearance and the second one potentially a different building functionality. Having these options seemed more impactful.
