Why is it important to accurately model the land features of your project site with a toposurface?
- What aspects of a building design are most affected by the terrain features?
- The material the building is being built with is key to having a building withstand different climates and environments. Also incorporating windows in the right areas to allow heat in without using a heater or restricting heat from coming in by not adding windows.
When designing a project...
- Should the building adapt to the terrain?
- Or, should you adapt the terrain to the building?
- I think the building has to adapt to the terrain. The environment will always being stronger than any material that is man made, therefore it only makes sense that the building will have to adapt to the terrain.
What considerations affect a project team's decision-making when deciding the floor-to-floor height to use in a multi-story building?
- From a real estate developer's perspective?
- Developers aim to maximize the usable space while adhering to building codes. Taller floor heights reduce the number of floors that can fit within zoning height limits, reducing rentable or sellable area.
- From a designer's perspective?
- Taller floor heights create a sense of openness, light, and airiness, which enhances user comfort. This is especially desirable in spaces like lobbies, commercial offices, or luxury apartments.
- From an engineer's perspective?
- Taller floor heights may require thicker floor slabs or additional reinforcement to support larger spans and the overall weight of the structure.
- From a builder's perspective?
- Taller floor heights require more complex formwork and shoring systems during construction, as larger spans must be supported. This can extend construction time and increase labor costs.
- From an owner's perspective?
- Owners aim to maximize the building’s rentable or sellable area within the constraints of zoning regulations. Taller floor heights may reduce the total number of floors and, consequently, leasable square footage, impacting potential income.
What are the advantages of stacking the levels of a multi-story building vertically?
- Can you share an interesting example of a building that doesn’t vertically stack (where the floor plates change their shaped radically between the floor levels)?
- The Dancing House (also known as "Fred and Ginger") in Prague, designed by architects Frank Gehry and Vlado Milunić.
- What were the advantages or reasons for non-vertical stacking?
- Gives the building a more unique effect, rather than just have floors stacked on top of each other.
Why do stairs follow specific proportions with a set relationship between the tread length and riser height?
- How can building modeling help prevent the mistakes that often occur when designing and installing stairs?
- Allows designers to create highly accurate models of staircases, ensuring that dimensions such as tread depth, riser height, and overall run are correct from the outset. This helps prevent common mistakes like misaligned steps or inconsistent riser heights, which can lead to building code violations or uncomfortable stair usage.
