What are the primary goals of creating a building model? Who are the key stakeholders?

The primary goal of creating a building model is to show your vision for what the building should be. This means it can express what you want to implement and gives you the freedom to make any changes needed to your ideas. The key stakeholders in this would be the designer and the users of the design.

  • What do they need?

They need an idea that is translated to an image. This allows it to be edited and tweaked, which serves the planning purpose of designing projects. This also means that the vision is almost complete and as a result can move onto physically planning a project.

  • What do they care about most?

They care the most about a sound model that illustrates a vision for the design. This is because if you can create a design of something, more often than not, you can find a way to build it. This means the actual idea and representation of the idea is what is most important in this process.

How much detail should you include in your building model? How do you decide?

  • As you develop your initial design?
  • As you continue to iterate and develop on your design?
  • What are the key stages?
  • And how much detail should you include at each stage?

How much detail should you include about the composition (layers, materials, thicknesses) of your wall, floor, and roof assemblies at different stages of your design process?

  • Conceptual design
  • Preliminary design
  • Design development
  • Construction documentation

Many door and window manufacturers provide Revit families for doors and windows that you can specify for your building design.

  • What is the advantage to manufacturers for providing these families? (it's not free to create and provide them...)

I think the advantage is that we get used to using their doors and windows. This means that if we end up going on to build houses or other buildings, we will be used to their products and as a result most likely choose their products.

  • What is the benefit to you as the designer of using these manufacturer-provided families? Is there an advantage to using them versus the families provided in the Revit library?

I think the benefit to me as the designer is that the doors from the manufacturer provided families I can find in real life. This means that the implementation of my design is a lot more seamless and easy. I think that using them helps to build good habits in materials that will be easy to find when I am in the work force.

What are the advantages of getting the Revit component families (for furniture, equipment, and fittings) directly from the manufacturer versus from an online sharing website like RevitCity.com?

The advantages of getting the Revit component families directly from the manufacturer versus an online sharing website is that it provides us with a more accurate representation of these products. The manufacturer products exist in real life and therefore are as real as it gets. It also means we can get the most up to date information about the current furniture and equipment, once again meaning we can be a lot more accurate with our designs on Revit.
