What are the primary goals of creating a building model? Who are the key stakeholders?

  • To be able to easily visualize designs for key stakeholders to improve communicate, plan budgets and timelines, and ensure project viability and adherence to regulations
  • They can be the owners, contractors investors, engineers, architects, regulators.
  • What do they need?
  • They need clear and accurate information to be able to execute development
  • What do they care about most?
  • They need to be able to use dimensions and specifications to finish products according to the stakeholder’s needs

How much detail should you include in your building model? How do you decide?

  • As you develop your initial design?
  • In the initial designs include enough information to communicate the fundamentals, such as the floor plans
  • As you continue to iterate and develop on your design?
  • As you ensure alignment, continue to add details to become more specific, including materials, furniture, plumbing, window and door types etc.
  • What are the key stages?
  • Conceptual, Preliminary, Design, Construction
  • And how much detail should you include at each stage?
  • Detail gets more granular through each stage until the structure and aesthetic elements have are finalized

Many door and window manufacturers provide Revit families for doors and windows that you can specify for your building design.

  • What is the advantage to manufacturers for providing these families? (it's not free to create and provide them...)
  • It prompts families to consider using their materials in the final execution, so although it costs them money to create, the ease of use should prompt more people to use them in designs and result in purchases
  • What is the benefit to you as the designer of using these manufacturer-provided families? Is there an advantage to using them versus the families provided in the Revit library?
  • You can get more granular in the purpose and specifications that the doors and windows provide and also choose designs that would fit in better visually with the space
