Give examples of how the building information for a specific location in the project needs to be filtered for different audiences and purposes?

BIM models are usually required to be tailored to cater the needs of different stakeholders in the project. For example, architects require details on spatial layouts, materials, and design intent, while structural engineers need to see load-bearing elements and integrity concerns. MEP engineers focus on system layouts and coordination of services, whereas contractors need detailed construction drawings and sequencing for execution. Clients and developers are interested in visual representations and cost estimates to match their vision and budget. Facility managers require as-built data for maintenance and system operations.

Should your design ideas always be conveyed through photorealistic renders?

No, design ideas do not always need to be conveyed through photorealistic renders. While photorealistic renders can be highly effective for certain purposes, such as marketing or final presentations, they are not always the most appropriate or necessary tool for conveying design ideas during all stages of a project. Despite low-level renderings or sketches have less visual appealing effects, they leave room for flexibility and invite more constructive feedback during early phases. When presented with a more abstract visualization, stakeholders may feel more comfortable suggesting changes, knowing that the design is still evolving and adaptable. In addition, low-level detail finishes allow for more intuitive and concise perceptions into the project at the early phase of the design phase, when the most of the time and resources are not yet spent on the beautifying the graphics with plenty of room for alternations.

Name some applications where viewing the building and model information in virtual reality or augmented reality would be most beneficial?

  • Are there advantages to using a C.A.V.E as a virtual environment versus VR headsets?

VR/AR are most beneficial in the preliminary phase of the project when virtually nothing/a very few things are built. The project owner or the client is able to perform a walkthrough with the VR/AR goggles to inspect the design inside the 3D BIM model to determine if any modifications are required to update the design. In addition, it can also be very helpful when detecting clashes between different disciplines (architectural, structural, MEP, etc.) in a more intuitive way. It could also be used in evaluating and assessing if the design meets the ADA requirement (e.g. a wheelchair is able to rotate without obstruction in an ADA designated restroom). CAVEs are ideal for collaborative environments and extended viewing sessions where comfort and high visual fidelity are key. VR headsets, on the other hand, are more accessible, portable, and interactive, making them suitable for more flexible or individualized use cases. The choice depends on the specific needs of the project, such as the number of participants, level of interactivity, and budget.
