What are the principal advantages of using a single building information model of the existing conditions as the foundation for modeling proposed additions or renovations?

  • Why not create a separate model for the new proposed design?

What sort of complexities are introduced when you construct a building complex in phases?

  • What happens at the interfaces between the buildings as the phases advance?
  • How can you plan and prepare for these complexities as your create your initial building model?
  • Many complications arise when designing a building in multiple phases. A challenge that I faced was that when I created my alternate design, I accidentally demolished everything in my new design, and didn’t realize until I was done designing my alternate. Something you have to pay attention to is the order in which phases are placed. It seems that you can’t have two options for one instance in time - to design my alternate I made a phase after the new phase and demolished the elements in the new phase. To prepare for thee complexities, it would be best to first map out how many different phases you will have and what will be constructed in each one; make the duplicates for each and assign them to their correct phase/filter.

What are the principal advantages of using a single building information model of the existing conditions as the foundation for modeling several proposed design alternatives for a portion of the building?

  • Why not create a separate model for each of the design alternatives?

In your project, which features of the proposed design did you choose to model as design alternatives?

  • Why did you choose these building features? And what were the biggest challenges in modeling them as the design alternatives?
  • For my design alternatives, I offered a remodel of the second floor. The second floor contains most of the requested elements, including the makerspace, printing room, and student conference rooms. I decided to offer an alternate for this since it is the most detailed floor. In the alternate, I made the rooms more modular, with a much bigger makerspace. These two options can be seen differently depending on the values of the client, such as if they’d like a large creative space, or want more spaces for students to meet in private.
