What are the primary goals of creating a building model? Who are the key stakeholders?

Creating a building model can showcase a preliminary design for a structure and provide some insight on the future of the project. By highlighting important important such as the dimensions and materials used, contractors and engineers can better gauge the cost and quantity of materials needed, while engineers can determine if the proposed design is even realistic. Key stakeholders would include the people funding these projects, as they want a general idea of how their funding for these projects are going to be spent.

Many door and window manufacturers provide Revit families for doors and windows that you can specify for your building design.

By creating these families, manufacturers are making their online materials more accessible, thus people working on projects can see how the products of these manufacturers would look within these projects. Seeing the final result of these families in a Revit project may lead individuals to follow through with using the exact same materials in their realized projects. Providing a sort of “test run” ultimately allows customers to see what they want and how it would look in reality. As a designer, using these manufactered-provided families provides a glimpse of how a Revit project may look in reality and uses real information. While the Revit library has its own families, these would not necessarily reflect a real door that would be used in a project.

What are the advantages of getting the Revit component families (for furniture, equipment, and fittings) directly from the manufacturer versus from an online sharing website like RevitCity.com?

By using Revit component families directly from manufacturers, we are able to use exact measurements for furniture, equipment, and fittings that are going to go inside our building. While using RevitCity component families provides more options, that may not necessarily represent the fittings that will be used in the building.
