Description

When I initially thought about this structure, I was thinking about Younger Lagoon in Santa Cruz. On their website, they encourage outside scientific field work within the Lagoon but clearly state that there are no facilities available. I built this structure with the idea that different agencies could rent out this space as their field research station away from home. This structure would be located on a bluff overlooking the lagoon and ocean. This is so mobility impaired individuals could still access the building, while others went down into the lagoon.

The structure has a simple slanted roof for easy construction. The storage and lab are on the north facing wall because they need to be cooler environments (dirt core samples, temperature control etc). The south facing wall has many windows both for light and heat (Northern Santa Cruz can be chilly). Windows were placed high on the north facing wall and east/west walls to expel the heated air during the summer. Desks all face toward the windows to minimize any glare on computer screens. The Lab and Restroom can be accessed quickly through the side door. This is great for cleaning yourself up after field work and bringing in samples without dirtying the rest of the building. There is ample room behind the desks to be ADA compliant as well as room in the bathroom and lab to maneuver a wheelchair. The storage room is accessible both from the exterior and interior. The exterior door for the storage room was placed with the idea that someone may have long core samples in mind or a small kayak. The corner of the building/meeting area has a wall available for a white board. The whiteboard wall is also facing away from windows to minimize glare. Overall a simple structure for easy construction.
