Module 4 - Points to Ponder
Please share your comments on 3 of the following Points to Ponder questions. (Choose 3 of the questions below.)
What types of building information are best portrayed in 3D views?
- 3D views are best for showing spatial and coordination-heavy information that are hard to understand in 2D. These include
- Overall building shape and massing
- Staircases, ramps, roofs
- Intersections such as roof-to-wall, roof-to-roof, wall-to-wall junctions
- Topography and site conditions
- Which stakeholders require 2D views, and why?
- Contractors need 2D views for precise dimensions and build instructions
- Structural engineers and architects need 2D shop drawings for clear sections, callouts, and dimensions
- Government and inspection agencies require standardized 2D drawings for code review and compliance
Give examples of how the building information for a specific location in the project needs to be filtered for different audiences and purposes?
Should your design ideas always be conveyed through photorealistic renders?
The design ideas should not always be conveyed through photorealistic renders because it risks creating unrealistic images and expectations for stakeholders, who might think those are exactly how the ideas will turn out in real life.
- How does the level of detail in the rendering and its presentation affect the perception of stakeholders reviewing your design?
- Lower level of detail could lead stakeholders to focus more on the conceptual design (overall proportion and massing, spatial relationships), which encourages flexibility and changes from stakeholders.
- Higher level of detail could help clients to buy into the design more as it creates a sense of final certainty for the design. It is useful in the stage of marketing and fundraising. However, it can make stakeholders feel like everything is locked into place and not possible to be changed.
Name some applications where viewing the building and model information in virtual reality or augmented reality would be most beneficial?
- Are there advantages to using a C.A.V.E as a virtual environment versus VR headsets?
How can schedule views be used to assist with procurement and model-based estimating?
Schedule views give a broad overview of the amount, types, and dimensions of the windows, doors, walls, etc. used in a project. Contractors and manufacturers can use schedule views to quickly get an idea of the project-related quantity without having to go through all the model views and count them themselves. This efficient method ultimately improve time and accuracy for estimating and procuring the cost for all the windows, doors, and walls in the project.
