What types of building information are best portrayed in 3D views?

I think furniture, exterior views, multi-story buildings, and interior rooms are best portrayed in 3D views because it allows the client to better visualize the space and picture themselves immersed in it. Construction companies require the 2D views in order to better understand the dimensions as well as placement of doors and windows.

Give examples of how the building information for a specific location in the project needs to be filtered for different audiences and purposes?

For the client, a floor plan should include furniture as well as all of the aesthetic elements so that they can easily picture themselves in the space. But, when showing the same floor plan to a construction team, more emphasis should be placed on the dimensions and tags so that they know which doors and window go where as well as how far apart to place them.

Should your design ideas always be conveyed through photorealistic renders?

The short answer is no. Highly photorealistic renders are most useful when showing or proposing a space to a potential client who is trying to envision themselves using that space. For these, the rendering should include enough detail to seem as close to real-life perception as possible. Examples of details include shading, door handles, trees, the sky color, etc. But for stakeholders on the contruction side, all of these details may be unnecessary and in some cases overwhelming by taking away from the portrayal of key information like dimensions.
