What types of building information are best portrayed in 3D views?

  • Which stakeholders require 2D views, and why?

Sample views of the structure are best suited for 3D views, as it allows stakeholders to immerse themselves into the building and get a glimpse of what the final product will look like. Stakeholders that would prefer 2D views would include anybody working on-site, as it would assist them on the exact information needed to construct the building. While having an immersive view of the structure would be nice for the constructors, it would be more helpful to have floor plans to better gauge and understand how the building is going to be constructed.

Should your design ideas always be conveyed through photorealistic renders?

While photorealistic renders allow stakeholders to immerse themselves into the design that is being made, these renders do not provide the full picture of what the stucture is going to look like. For stakeholders that do not have the technical knowledge for this, a picture may be better, but for engineers or other stakeholders in that sector, design that provide detailed information on the structure would be more appropriate.

How can schedule views be used to assist with procurement and model-based estimating?

By creating schedule views, contractors would be able to see the quantity of materials needed, allowing them to calculate in advance approximately how much money would be spent. If a schedule is not developed, contractors and constructors could only estimate how much they would need of each material, which could lead to either a surplus or not enough materials purchased, which would result in either a loss in time waiting for more materials or a waste of money due to an excess of materials purchased.
