Why is it important to accurately model the land features of your project site with a toposurface?
- Terrain features have a huge impact on design and construction, as they present challenges with climate, material, flooding, insulation, and strength of construction. It is important to accurately model the land features of the real region in order to take into consideration any impacts the land features would have on the design and to ensure that you are modeling in consideration of them.
When designing a project...
- It is important to adapt the project to the terrain, because in most cases, the terrain will ultimately be the deciding factor in building stability and sustainability. For example, building on a steep incline without regard to erosion risk or foundation material would be unwise, because the terrain will have a significant impact on the longevity of the house. You can alter the terrain to an extent (create a space of level ground on this incline for the house), but it is not a guarantee to remove erosion or landslide risk.
Why do stairs follow specific proportions with a set relationship between the tread length and riser height?
- I ran into issues with my stairs because they were at an angle and height that made them not line up with the ideal entrance to the second floor. However, it is important to follow specified stair proportions because they ensure that the stairs are accessible and do not become too steep or unsafe.
