What are the principal advantages of using a single building information model of the existing conditions as the foundation for modeling proposed additions or renovations?

By using a single building information model of the existing condition as the foundation for modeling proposed addition or renovations, we are able to provide the client / target audience with a full presentation off the different design phases that involve existing conditions, demolition. and new construction. By placing all of this on the same model, it is easier to see what is being demolished, kept, and added. This allows for easier cost estimation between phases and easier visualization of the final product which will allow for a project to flow more smoothly.

What sort of complexities are introduced when you construct a building complex in phases?

  • What happens at the interfaces between the buildings as the phases advance?
  • How can you plan and prepare for these complexities as your create your initial building model?

What are the principal advantages of using a single building information model of the existing conditions as the foundation for modeling several proposed design alternatives for a portion of the building?

  • Why not create a separate model for each of the design alternatives?

In your project, which features of the proposed design did you choose to model as design alternatives?

I chose to model the cafe area and the lounge / gallery as my design alternatives. I chose these areas because they are some of the main features of the building. I focused on changing the layouts of these areas. For the cafe area, both of the option allow for the center area of the cafe to be open, with the tables on either side. The design options allow for different sized tables, to allow for bigger or smaller dining groups. When designing the alternatives for the lounge / gallery, I focused on creating two alternatives that allowed for lounge space as well as tables to display student projects. I also made sure to keep wall space open above the tables and chairs to allow for more space to display projects. One design alternative focused on having the chairs along the wall of the space and the tables for display throughout the middle, while the other design option had tables along the edges and chairs on the other side of the room.
