Your Recommendation for the “Best” Design Option
Based on my analyses, Proposal 2 is the “best” design option. I prioritized the quality of exterior and public spaces in my analyses, emphasizing outdoor access and opportunities for green space for employee mental health and wellbeing. I selected Proposal 2 considering, first, sun hours, then microclimate and wind, and lastly, solar energy.
In terms of sun hours, Proposals 2 and 3 performed similarly when focusing on direct sun at ground level, with Proposal 3 performing slightly better. Proposal 1 was ruled out because the back of the building receives minimal sun in the winter. Next, looking at microclimate and wind, Proposal 2 offers a better option. The height of Proposal 3 intensifies wind and creates much larger shadows in areas, meaning the outdoor and green space areas will be far less comfortable and available than in Proposal 2. Lastly, Proposals 2 and 3 had fairly similar solar energy potential, with Proposal 3 again being slightly better.
Overall, however, when considering comfortable outdoor access and green space, Proposal 2 ultimately provides most balanced design option.
