What are the principal advantages of using a single building information model of the existing conditions as the foundation for modeling proposed additions or renovations?

  • Why not create a separate model for the new proposed design?
    • It allows you to see how a building will fit given the context of the place it will be built. If you made a building that technically fit the criteria, but without the style reference, it will likely 99 times out of 100 not fit in with the style at all. It allows you to see dimensions and wiggle room. Tons and tons of things.

What sort of complexities are introduced when you construct a building complex in phases?

  • What happens at the interfaces between the buildings as the phases advance?
    • Walls meant for the exterior and windows may need to be demolished. You have to think about where things may expand, which means certain places have to be undeveloped to save time and money down the line.
  • How can you plan and prepare for these complexities as your create your initial building model?
    • Place windows and other exterior parts of your building not in places or at least less so in places where things may be demolished for expansion purposes later on.
