Your Recommendation for the “Best” Design Option

In Phoenix the temperature and sun exposure is extremely high relative to most other sites in the world, which was the main criteria I analyzed when comparing my three proposals. I ended up choosing proposal 3, the “M-shaped” design with cutouts on the southern face that create courtyards where shade can mitigate the cooling needs of office and other spaces specified by the program. After comparing the first two proposals, I noticed that wind and microclimates weren’t much to iterate on in the Arizona site; however, there was a slightly considerable drop in the percent of ground that received sunlight (during Spring solstice) and a 20Kwh/ft^2 increase in average solar energy potential. I felt that the rotund and tall aesthetic did not fit the adjacent buildings and desert-like, flat site. I also did not include much space for an atrium or outdoor amenities. So, in my final proposal, I returned to a more linear design that included more shaded areas (like where the two circles converge in proposal 2) in order to gain the benefits of both the first and second design- significantly reducing sun exposure and finding balance in energy efficiency.

Also, the third proposal design was the most simple… which I think will make my life easier when completing future modules 😊
