Your Recommendation for the “Best” Design Option

Proposal 2 came out to be the best design option in terms of simplest construction, energy production, and configuration to sun and wind patterns. Proposal 2 offers up to 11,000,000 kWh of solar production per year, despite some indirect exposure on its lower floors. Though in comparison to Proposal 1 & 3, Proposal 2 does have much more direct sun exposure, this can be mitigated through construction techniques for shading and energy recapture, such as light shelves, louvers, or installation of vertical solar panels to capitalize on the additional solar access. Proposal 2’s microclimate on the building’s northern side also poses opportunities for managing heating & cooling based on building function, such as including most of the buildings’ internal gains on the northern side. Additionally, though not included in the screenshot, Proposal 2 yields the lowest carbon footprint in comparison to the other designs, at 577 kgCO₂e/m².
