Which types of structural framing systems and materials are most commonly used in the US for residences? For office buildings?
What factors determine why these are the most used materials?
Why do different teams of designers and subcontractors link and share their models during the design process?
What are the advantages of linking models?
Are there any disadvantages to linking models?
How do you think design coordination was done before we started using digital models?
What advantages does doing this coordination digitally have over previous methods?
Before digital models, I think design coordination was done through weekly or daily meetings. Digital coordination is more efficient and accurate than previous methods due to increased speed, better collaboration, automation of repetitive tasks, and the ability to access information from anywhere at any time
What strategies can design teams use to find and avoid clashes prior to the start of construction?
What can be done besides sharing the models digitally?
Design teams can find and avoid clashes through using BIM-based automated clash detection software, which requires early, ongoing collaboration among all disciplines and stakeholders. Other key strategies include establishing clear coordination protocols, running regular clash checks, prioritizing clashes, and performing virtual simulations. In addition, fostering a positive environment where teams feel comfortable communicating openly and can actively listen to one another.
At what point in the project development process should design coordination start?
Is it ever too early?
It should start as early as possible, ideally during the pre-construction or initial design phases. It is never too early
